The Fastest Way to Wash Your Car

Ken Arnswald |

Washing your car quickly and efficiently is a must with the busyness of life. It can be tempting just to run it through the car wash and call it a day. While this can seem like the easy solution, the car wash has harmful chemicals that you may want to avoid. That’s why we want to share the quick, easy, and safer way to wash your car at home!

The Quickest and Safest Way to Wash Your Car at Home

Why is the Car Wash Problematic?

When looking at the car wash, it can look like a fun place to pump some tunes and quickly clean the car. Most people have that fun memory of going through the car wash, so this can all make the car wash seem like a quick and fun way to clean the car. Here are a few things to keep in mind when going through a commercial car wash:

  • Many car washes use harsh chemicals - It is more cost-effective for them to use lower-priced chemicals to quickly clean your car. While this can seem like no big deal, it can have long-term health impacts and be damaging to the vehicle as well.

  • Many car washes will use unsafe cleaning methods after the car wash - One of the main reasons many people will go through a car wash is the ability to use the vacuums and provided cleaning supplies to quickly clean the inside of the vehicle. These supplies can be harmful to your health and would be staying in the vehicle long after you leave the car wash.

Car Wash Pro Tip:

If you simply must drive through a commercial car wash, you will want to turn off your fans in the car. This will keep the harmful fumes outside of your vehicle.

Is it Possible to Clean the Outside of the Car Quickly?

When most people think of washing the car, they think of buckets filled with water and a great deal of time. While this may be how some have handled cleaning the car, this doesn’t have to be the case for you. In fact, you could wash the entire outside of your car in a matter of minutes! Cleaning the car with products that are safe for your car has never been easier. Here are a few things to consider:

  • Ditch the car cleaning products - When cleaning your car, it can be tempting to walk down the automotive aisle and pick up every cleaner on the shelves. While this can be tempting, it’s not needed. In fact, those items are often loaded with harmful chemicals you don’t need to be exposed to. Did you know you can clean the outside of your car with only a few products?

  • Skip the sponges and giant water buckets - When cleaning the outside of a car many people picture countless large sponges and buckets of water filled with suds that are overflowing. This may seem like the go-to way to wash the outside of your car but it doesn’t have to be. In fact, it can be done much simpler!

  • Use the 5-minute clean walls bundle - I know a product labeled clean walls might not be your first go-to when cleaning the car but it should be! The clean walls tool will allow you to wash the entire outside of your car without bending or climbing to get to hard-to-reach areas. Even better, it’s a quick way to wash down the entire car and know that you are getting a high-quality clean!

What About the Inside of the Car?

When cleaning out cars, many people will try to work towards the new car smell. The new car smell is actually a combination of fireproofing chemicals and other treatments used to protect the car. These chemicals will give off gases that offer those smells. That "off-gasing" can actually be harmful to your health. Instead of striving for the new car smell, here are a few things to try:

  • Remove clutter and trash - One of the biggest culprits of a messy car is clutter and trash. Take a few minutes to remove items from the car that aren’t being used and throw away all trash. This will make the rest of your car cleaning so much easier! It can also help to set up a storage system in your car for items that are often kept in the car to decrease the clutter.

  • Wipe down all surfaces - Surfaces in the car can quickly accumulate dust and germs. Spray a microfiber cloth with an all-purpose cleaner and wipe down the surfaces inside of your car. This can include doors, dashboards, and a variety of hard surfaces in the car. Take some extra time to wipe out cup holders and make sure there is no stuck-on mess in them.

  • Give floors and upholstery a once over - One of the biggest areas to collect dust and grime is the carpet and upholstery in your vehicle. Use a stain remover before vacuuming out the car to remove stains and keep these areas fresh and clean. After you have used the stain remover, you will want to use a good vacuum to get into all the crevices and remove dust. *Pro tip - Remember to get under seats and clean out the trunk of your vehicle as well when cleaning carpets.

  • Don’t forget about the windows - Windows will often get cleaned on the outside of the car and rarely get cleaned on the inside. However, these surfaces can still collect dirt and grime. Use a microfiber cloth to quickly wash down the windows, rear window, and windshield. Taking the time to do this will help you to have better visibility and leave the car clean and fresh.
